Structural steel detailers & fabricators · Updated 2026-09-21

The best structural steel detailing software in 2026

Steel detailing sits at the choke point between the structural engineer’s design and the fabricator’s shop floor: a model that isn’t bolt-and-weld accurate becomes a field problem, and a detailing tool with no path into production tracking just becomes a second spreadsheet. The market splits between pure BIM modeling packages, hybrids that also design connections, and fabrication-management systems built around the model. We compared what detailing shops and fabricators actually license — real vendors only, no paid placements, pricing marked as indicative wherever it isn’t public.

The contenders, in detail

1. Tekla Structures

Pricing : quote-based (tiered licenses: Carbon / Graphite / Diamond)

Detailers on large, complex or multi-material BIM projects

Tekla Structures, from Trimble, is the BIM-first heavyweight of steel detailing: bolt-and-weld-accurate 3D models detailed enough to build directly from, used across engineering, detailing and fabrication in one shared model.

Strengths

  • +Model detail rich enough to build from without a separate drafting pass
  • +Widest structural BIM/IFC interoperability in the category
  • +Large plugin and fabricator-connection ecosystem

Watch out for

  • −Price and licensing sit at the top of the category
  • −Steep learning curve for a fully-featured seat

2. SDS2

Pricing : quote-based (Drafting / Modeling / Ultimate tiers)

Shops that want connection design and code checks inside the detailing tool

SDS2 (an ALLPLAN / Nemetschek Group product) pairs steel detailing with genuine connection design and code checking rather than drawings alone, shipping in Drafting, Modeling and Ultimate tiers so shops buy only the depth they need.

Strengths

  • +Genuine connection design and code checking, not just drawings
  • +Tiered packages avoid paying for capability you don’t use
  • +Direct integration with RISA-3D for firms that also design structures

Watch out for

  • −No public price list — every quote needs a sales conversation
  • −Smaller third-party ecosystem than Tekla outside the Nemetschek family

3. Advance Steel

Pricing : quote-based (standalone or bundled in the Autodesk AEC Collection)

Fabricators already running an Autodesk AEC software stack

Advance Steel is Autodesk’s steel detailing tool, built on the familiar AutoCAD engine and available standalone or bundled inside Autodesk’s AEC Collection — a natural fit for shops already standardized on Autodesk for architecture and civil work.

Strengths

  • +Runs on the familiar AutoCAD engine and command set
  • +Bundling inside the AEC Collection can cut total software spend for multi-discipline firms
  • +Native exchange with Revit and Robot Structural Analysis

Watch out for

  • −Detailing depth trails Tekla and SDS2 on the most complex connections
  • −Buying it standalone outside a bundle is comparatively expensive

4. STRUMIS

Pricing : quote-based

Mid-size to large fabricators who need estimating and shop-floor control, not just drawings

STRUMIS is a steel fabrication management system with roots in AceCad’s detailing heritage: estimating, production control, barcoding and material traceability wrapped around the model, used by a claimed 20,000+ users in 60+ countries.

Strengths

  • +Covers the whole job, from quote to production tracking, not just the model
  • +Barcoding and material traceability suit regulated structural work
  • +Decades of steel-specific development behind it

Watch out for

  • −Overkill for a detailing-only outfit with no shop floor to run
  • −Implementation is a project — evaluation requires a sales conversation

5. EZIIL

Pricing : flat team pricing, from ~$140/month to ~$338/month (+ ~$350 one-time onboarding)

Small and mid-size custom fabricators outgrowing spreadsheets

EZIIL is a newer, lightweight production-planning and job-tracking tool built specifically for custom steel fabricators of roughly 15-150 people still running the shop from spreadsheets. It layers scheduling, EN 1090-2 traceability and a mobile shop-floor app on top of whichever detailing software the shop already uses.

Strengths

  • +Published, flat team pricing — no per-seat guessing
  • +Built-in EN 1090-2 traceability for EU-regulated shops
  • +Fast to onboard compared with full fabrication-ERP suites

Watch out for

  • −Not a detailing tool itself — it sits alongside Tekla/SDS2/Advance Steel rather than replacing them
  • −Younger vendor with a shorter track record than the detailing incumbents

How to choose

01

Detailing depth vs. connection design

Some packages only draw the model — geometry, bolts, welds — and leave connection design and code checking to the structural engineer or a separate calculation. SDS2 markets itself as bundling both; decide whether your detailers are expected to size connections or just document them before picking a tier.

02

Where the model’s job ends

Tekla, SDS2 and Advance Steel stop at the detailing deliverable — drawings, NC files, an accurate 3D model. STRUMIS and EZIIL extend into estimating, barcoding and shop-floor scheduling. If your spreadsheets are really tracking production, not drawings, look past the pure detailing tools.

03

Round-trip with the structural engineer’s model

A detailing model rebuilt from scratch instead of imported from the engineer’s analysis software costs days per project. Check the actual import/export path — IFC, RISA-3D, Revit — with your own engineer’s software, not just a vendor’s generic BIM claim.

04

Licensing model and renewal costs

Perpetual licenses with annual maintenance, seat-based subscriptions and flat team pricing all show up in this category, and maintenance or renewal-cap increases can add real money on top of the sticker price every year. Model the three-year cost, not just the first invoice.

Frequently asked questions

What happened to FabTrol, and is it still worth buying?

AVEVA discontinued FabTrol in June 2022 — existing licenses keep running but no longer receive updates or security patches. Most fabricators who used it have since moved to EZIIL, STRUMIS or a similar production-planning layer paired with a separate detailing package (Tekla, SDS2, Advance Steel); do not start a new deployment on a discontinued product.

Is a full BIM detailing seat overkill for a small custom fabrication shop?

Often. EZIIL is built specifically for shops of roughly 15-150 people still running production off spreadsheets, and it layers scheduling, EN 1090-2 traceability and a mobile shop-floor app on top of whichever detailing tool you already use rather than replacing it. A small shop with light detailing needs can also start on SDS2’s cheaper Drafting-only tier instead of the full Ultimate package.

Do these tools actually exchange data with the structural engineer’s analysis software, or do I still remodel from scratch?

It depends on the pair. SDS2 has a direct, purpose-built integration with RISA-3D. Tekla supports broad IFC/BIM exchange across most major structural analysis packages. Advance Steel exchanges natively within the Autodesk ecosystem (Revit, Robot Structural Analysis) but less cleanly outside it. Confirm the exact round-trip — not just a generic “BIM-compatible” claim — with your engineer’s specific software before assuming it removes remodeling.
